Boat Maintenance 101 for the Cabo Climate

Owning a boat in Baja California Sur—especially around Cabo San Lucas and La Paz—is a dream come true. But the intense sun, saltwater, and year-round boating season can wear your boat down fast if you're not keeping up with the right maintenance.

Whether you’re fishing offshore, cruising to the islands, or just anchored in a quiet bay, here’s what you need to know to keep your boat in top shape in the Cabo climate.

Boat maintenance checklist

1. Rinse After Every Trip (Seriously—Every Time)

Saltwater is your boat’s biggest enemy. After each outing, thoroughly rinse your boat with freshwater, especially:

  • The hull

  • Outboards

  • Rod holders, cleats, and deck hardware

  • Electronics and controls

  • Trailer (if launching from salt ramps)

Leaving salt to dry on surfaces leads to corrosion, pitting, and long-term damage.

2. Use Marine-Grade Protectants & Waxes

The Cabo sun is strong—UV damage will fade fiberglass, crack vinyl, and weaken plastics.

  • Apply a UV-protective wax to your gelcoat every few months

  • Use vinyl protectant on cushions and seating

  • Cover electronics when not in use

If your boat is stored outdoors, consider a full cover to protect it from dust, birds, and heat buildup.

3. Check and Replace Anodes Regularly

Your sacrificial anodes protect your engine, prop, and underwater metals from galvanic corrosion. In warm Baja waters, they wear down faster.

  • Inspect zincs monthly (or more if you boat often)

  • Replace when they’re 50% gone

  • Don’t mix zinc and aluminum anodes—they corrode at different rates

4. Stay on Top of Oil, Fuel & Cooling Systems

Outboards love the Sea of Cortez—but only if they’re taken care of.

  • Flush the engine after every trip (use a hose & flush port)

  • Change engine oil and lower unit lube every 100 hours

  • Check your fuel water separator and use stabilizer if storing your boat

  • Inspect cooling water flow to avoid overheating

5. Maintain Your Trailer Too

If you’re trailering around Baja, your trailer takes a beating. Check:

  • Tire pressure & tread

  • Bearings and hubs (grease regularly)

  • Brake system

  • Winch and straps

  • Trailer lights (salt kills wiring fast)

A trailer in poor condition can ruin a great boating day.

6. Dry Docking = Longer Lifespan

One of the best ways to avoid corrosion and reduce maintenance is to store your boat out of the water when not in use. Dry docking prevents marine growth, lowers maintenance costs, and keeps your boat ready to go year-round.

We offer dry dock storage in Cabo and La Paz, with maintenance support so your boat stays in prime condition between adventures.
